Janssem and I had been trying for a few weeks to find a suitable date for us to shoot at Paranapiacaba, a district on the outskirts of the São Paulo metropolitan area where there’s a beautiful natural reserve with several waterfalls. But then I got an invitation to participate in a collective performance organized by André Medeiros Martins on the very same day we had scheduled our shoot. The performance was going to be an unmissable event and was also going to happen in an incredible location: the ruins of an old school at Vila Maria Zélia, a disused industrial village that became a protected cultural heritage for the city. I’d probably never get another chance of photographing there, so I had the great ideia of inviting Jan to do the photographic coverage of the act itself. But of course, we arrived a couple hours before the start so that we could do our own photo session, for 100 NUDE Shoots and for his own artistic nude series, Other Colours, a project “about people and their inner spectrum, a project to reveal a subtle view upon the inner self, undressed of clothing, fears, armors, prejudices”, in Janssem Cardoso’s own words.

The mysterious environment of the ruins, the cloudy but illuminated afternoon, the intermittent rain and even the presence of the other performers, who were all around warming up and couldn’t avoid peeking at our shoot (can you find one of them in one of the photos below?), all of it contributed to keep us going enthusiastically, and we only stopped photographing when our time was up due to the act that was about to start at the place.

The session was so terrific that the result was a huge collection of great images that we both just couldn’t bear not to publish. So here’s another shoot that I’ve decided to publish in two parts, due to the sheer amount of beautiful photographs. This is the first part, then: sort of an introduction to that great place and to the magic of that amazing day

“We met on the internet. Hugo was looking for new views for his Project and I saw there an opportunity to give myself a push for starting to shoot artistic nudes, something I had been wanting for a while. We ended up opportunely photoshooting in a ruined building belonging to a preserved vintage village in São Paulo. We had little time to photograph because of the performance that would soon start at the location, but we managed to do work that we can be really proud of. Hugo brings, beyond physical beauty, a carefree devotion to posing and a refined understanding of our intention and direction, an extremely generous man in everything he does. In addition to opening doors for me to the vast world of nude photography, we’ve become very good friends and partners in further works.” — Janssem Cardoso
